Excel: Sparklines

Hi, every one, it has been a long time, since my last post in Feb 2012 as i was busy with some of new Books and of course the translations of the same.

Here,  we are going to learn about Microsoft Excels 2010 New feature : Spark lines.

What is SparkLine???
Sparklines can be defined as " a short single cell chart prepared on specified range of numeric cells". This is a new feature introduced with Excel 2010 and provides you feasibility to create short charts that can be place anywhere in your worksheet.
Major remarkable feature of Sparklines is that "it takes very less space on sheet and are quite easy to manage"
Various formatting options are available as Sparklines  Tools and we may set formatting as per our requirements.
Now we are going to study the complete process of preparing and managing sparklines.

Step 1: Open Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and create a blank workbook( if you are already have an existing data file, skip this step and continue with Step 2)

Step2: Type some sample data, like i have done here in my example


Step 3: Now place cell pointer on the cell where you want sparklines to be placed, as shown in the above picture.

Step 4: Now move to Insert> Sparklines and click any of the available Sparklines options:
  1. Line
  2. Win/Loss
  3. Column

Step5: After choosing from any of the available Sparklines Style, excel gives you following dialog box:

Step6: Click OK to get the results, like shown below:

That's all with the basic working of Sparklines.

Understanding the Sparklines Tools
After creating Sparklines with basic setting we may use the available Sparklines tools to make our sparklines more attractive and meaningful

Now we are going to understand each and every option according to their utility.
  1. Edit Data: Using this  option, we may change the Source Data for our Sparklines, in case we have missed any of the cells from selection
  2. Type: Using this option, we may change the type of existing Sparklines.
  3. Show: Here, the available options are of On/OFF type. Under this category, you may ON/OFF the visibility of following effects on your Sparklines
    • High Point
    • Low Point
    • Negative Point
    • First Point
    • Last Point
    • Markers
  4. Style: Here, you may select the display Style for your Sparklines
  5. SparkLines Color: Under this option, you may select color for your entire Sparkline
  6. Marker Color : Under this option, you may specify color for each type of Sparkline point.
Note: You may use the CLEAR option to remove the sparklines from the active cell.
